The underlying messages within Ahmad Armani's work are interesting andidentifiable, going beyond the origins of war but also expressing theinteractions between Rational and Mystic civilizations and theirindividual conceptualization of desire. Expressing thesesocio-philosophical ideas in a textual minimalistic manner is a worthyfeat indeed, a talent that I hope Amani will further develop. For achild's perspective, the language is easily understood although guidedparental discussions would be needed to make the story as a wholemeaningful, providing a good primer into how literature uses allegory to describe deep ideas.
The overt childishness of the drawings is a pointing finger at the primal nature of the character expressions, andthe slow evolution of the artistic involvement adds very well to thesense of movement. Yet, on a personal level, I feel unsatisfied withthe art, as if there was some grand potential here held back by Armani's stylistic choice. Of course, this could be an intentional hidden layer designed to leave me as unsatisfied as the two grandparents were at the end... On the other hand, the artistic style choice presentsadvantages for a child, uncomplicated yet illustrative of the text.
Nevertheless, there is a lingering sense of some missing artistic element that wouldpropel "Our Grandparents' Last War" to further allegorical heights, alacking of sublime satisfaction that comes with internal completeness.Although I rate the overall publication as 3 stars in respects to my own preferences, I must allow artistic satisfaction as a deeply subjectivematter and give 4 stars, especially if presented to a child.
Inpure context of a children's publication, it is utterly dependent on the parents if they wish to introduce the concept of "conflict born ofdesire" at an early age. I definitely can see "Our Grandparents' LastWar" as an advanced homeschooling text.

This book, like the other books that this author has written, is for those who would like to be prompted to think about subjects they ordinarily might not take the time to consider. My Grandparents' Last War is a book about humanity, life and our own humble beginnings.When reading this you can insert your own opinions and beliefs and really turn this book into something personal. I enjoyed the way the characters were simple, and yet there is a hidden complexity to this work that makes you stop to ponder what it means on an individual basis.
I like the fantasy element of this work and the way the author uses simple yet effective illustrations to convey his point. If you have not read this book yet, pick up a copy and give it a try, it is unique and worth the time.

Ahmad Amani both wrote and illustrated this uniquely crafted book that combines visual pleasures with clever philosophical opinions – a book that deserves wide attention. From his biography we learn that Ahmad Amani lives in the Middle East. He is a graduate of the Art University in Tehran. His writings are stories about people, society, and culture. The books were written in a new concept and fantasy form. He hopes that his books make us think while enjoying them. Success!
Combining minimalist drawing with words this story is about two grandparents, the male grandparent of the author and the female grandparent of a friend (the later is from Africa). They are wooly creatures who roll around on the earth. One day they decide they are hungry (there is a slight disagreement on the word hunger versus hungry!), they eat green grass and suddenly grow bigger. They decide they would like to eat meat when they see a big beast eating meat, but the beast controls meat and in order to taste it, the grandparents must fight the beast with a stick pulled from the ground – the first war, and one in which the female grandparent loses an eye, but they both gain arms. Now they are the kings of the jungle in Africa. They next travel to Asia where in a dream one grandparent imagines sweet cakes and on arising shares the desires for sweets, but the other grandparent, in attempting to gain wheat from the ground discovers they must fight for the wheat. The second war begins, though their branch doesn’t serve as an adequate weapon so the grandparents create a sword and they win wheat for making cakes by fighting the earth - and they gain legs. Off to Europe they want carbonated water and in going to the mountain where one grandparent ‘thinks’ there will be water (another argument ensues over the phrase ‘I think therefore I am here’), the mountain will not give up carbonated water, the male grandparent breaks his leg, but through ‘thinking’ the female grandparent creates an artificial leg and a gun. They go to America where they are delighted by the stars, but this time they chose not to go to war with the sky just to get a sweet star and the wars end – except the one over the use of magic words!
Ahmad Amani charms the reader with electing to place the story in the framework of two grandparents and in the way he develops the idea of war and of weapons, all in the need to satisfy transitory desires. Wise, fun, entertaining and thoughtful this is a treasure of a little book form a gifted artist thinker. Grady Harp, December 13
