Postcard parables are short stories that conveniently fit on the flip sides of picture post-cards. A standard U.S. postcard measures only 5 ×3 inches, but ever since I got hold of a really teeny typewriter, I’ve managed to squeeze up to 450 words of crucial exposition into one story.
Cautionary Chronicles A Compendium of Human Striving David Ross Gunn 9781942515814 Books
When I first saw the cover of Cautionary Chronicles I was expecting a Sisyphean treatise of pathos and futility. How right I was! Not really, this is in fact a gem of humor, a reflection of the strange and wholly original space occupied, at least occasionally, by David Gunn's mind and is something that the father of photography could not have anticipated. Each page is a reminder that what the camera catches is not always what the photographer intended and, in the alternative universe presented by Gunn, it is the unintended that matters. I read the book in its entirety in a sitting, forgoing other than the sustenance it provided, and felt a sudden pang of illumination that I soon realized was a leg cramp. But the hour or so I spent poring over the photos and their accompanying text was truly enlightening. So much so that I threw out my copy of the I Ching and now use Cautionary Chronicles as my method of divination. Meditating on the photographs instead of I Ching hexagrams is no more enlightening but is much more entertaining. Buy this book or the ghost of Andre Breton will haunt your dreams.Product details

Cautionary Chronicles A Compendium of Human Striving David Ross Gunn 9781942515814 Books Reviews
David Ross Gunn has scoured the archives of period photography to acquire images to which he has attached his own perspective on the civilized and uncivilized world in which we live. Gunn, a composer and satirist, brings the rhythm of his music to his prose. The result, both unique and exceptionally entertaining, is like his music, except quieter.
I received this book as a gift -- and found that the dadaist spirit is alive in modern Emperor's clothing with David Ross Gunn's "Cautionary Chronicles". It is the web equivalent of Duchamp's readymades, but brought to print. If this idea seems absurd, it is. But that is in part the point. A greater point, though, is the author's ability to create a complete fantasy tale that reflects absurdly on its photos -- and on life -- in a hundred or so words. It's Duchamp become Hemingway. And it's a bedside book. So read it and sleep with a smile.
